Highbank Orchard

Nestled just on the edge of Kilkenny city, Highbank Orchard is a family-run, fully organic farm. The first apple orchards were planted in 1969 by Rod and Julie Calder-Potts. For over 30 years, the land has been nurtured without pesticides or chemicals, producing exceptional, multi-award-winning Orchard Syrup and Treacle, crisp apple juices, spirits and distinctive ciders crafted with wild yeasts. Visitors can explore the orchard on the immersive Self-Guided Red Gates Tour and discover the story, passion, and flavour behind every bottle.

Highbank ‘Red Gate’ Self-Guided Orchard Walk

Duration 1 hr

Step beyond the Red Gate and discover Highbank’s Self-Guided Red Gate Orchard Walk, a unique trail through gardens and orchards marked by striking vernacular wrought-iron gates, many originally forged centuries ago in Highbank’s own farmyard and now freshly painted in vibrant red. Each gate features a QR code that allows you to virtually follow Rod Calder-Potts as he shares the rich history of his 5th generation farm, the story of his ancestral 19th-century home, and the organic practices that shape Highbank today. With 12 QR checkpoints to explore, you’ll stroll through rows of apple trees, pause at Lovers’ Gate for panoramic mountain views, wander beneath the canopy of the great oak tree, get a glimpse of Burnchurch Castle, and spot unique gate posts resting on stones from Mitchelstown Castle. Tours are €15 per person with €5 redeemable in the farm shop.
