Visit Kilkenny Castle

Kilkenny Castle has stood for over eight centuries, and is one of the premier visitor attractions in the county. Located at a crossing on the River Nore, it was originally built for the 4th Earl of Pembroke, William Marshall, during the 13th Century. Later, it became the possession of the Butler family for almost 600 years, before being presented to the people of Kilkenny in 1967 for a token payment of £50. Now, the castle is in the care of the Office of Public Works, and can be viewed by the public.

The 2017 admission charges is €8.00 for adults, €4.00 for children, and €6.00 for students. A family pass is €20.00. This covers admission to the castle, as well as a guided tour. Information pamphlets are available in multiple languages for international visitors.

A tea-room is also available on site, situated in the castle’s Victorian kitchen. It still contains its original cooking range, with rows of delicate plates and copper pots upon display. It’s open during the castle opening hours, and is a must stop along your tour.

The castle opening hours depend upon the season; and are listed below.

October to February - 09.30 to 16.30
