Local Heritage Sites

Kilkenny is a cultural gem, with a fascinating heritage. Spotted throughout the city and county are a number of historical attractions, all originating in different periods. To help you know which ones to visit first, the excellent team at the Newpark Hotel have detailed what to do in Kilkenny to explore the region’s rich history:

Dominican Black Abbey
Founded in 1226 by the Earl of Pembroke, the Dominican Black Abbey is still a breath-taking site. The abbey has been fully restored, including a spectacular stained glass window. The Abbey was named after the Black Friars, or the Dominicans, and still has friars assigned to the site. Visitors to the abbey are welcome to engage in the daily public services.

The Dominican Black Abbey is just a 5 minute drive from the Newpark Hotel, Kilkenny.

Jerpoint Park
Jerpoint Park is an amazingly preserved 12th century town. Walk in the footsteps of those long gone, and explore how they once lived. House, businesses, and even a Cistercian Abbey are available for the public to view. A working farm is also included in the site, and guided tours are available for visitors.

Kilkenny Castle
Kilkenny Castle has stood on the River Nore for over 8 centuries. It’s been in the possession of the Kilkenny people since 1967, and guided tours are available of the refurbished interior. This offers a fascinating insight into how the upper class of the past once lived; and of course some fantastic picture opportunities!
